I was, I once, I wish I still were,
A granddaddy oak tree,
The patriarch tree
In a network of oak trees,
My family of a billion,
They looked up to me,
They listened to me.
What happened you might ask?
That changed my fate,
From being a granddaddy oak tree
To a lone granddaddy oak tree stump.
I shall tell you of the very day,
My life transformed.
They came that day,
Men in yellow hats.
They looked at my granddaughter,
They touched her all over.
Then they knocked on her and knocked her down.
She was first to go,
My granddaughter oak.
She stood tall and proud,
It made my insides swell with joy.
Even when they fell her down,
She went with dignity.
Noisy, so noisy,
Pain, so painful,
One by one,
Each loved one fell.
Now I am left,
A stump, nothing more.
My family, my precious trees,
Swooped and gone.
Forever my tears will flow,
Everyday my heart breaks,
Over and over again...
'Tis unquenched sorrow.
Overwhelming.
